The California fires are burning my old stomping grounds, and anyone who has ever been in that area knows how beautiful it is. I don't envy the fire crews though; there are steep hillsides, blind canyons filled with years of underbrush, and winds that whip up out of nowhere. Some of these fires could have been prevented, or at least minimized with a rational fire prevention program. But California makes controlled burning a very difficult proposition, and some of these fires are being fueled by fuel that should have been burned years ago.
The difference between a controlled burn of a few years of accumulated brush, and what we see now is unbelievable. Trees can handle small fires, but when there is enough fuel, the trees themselves burn and burn and burn...
