Sunday Travel Thread: Patriotic Places [Y-not]

I wasn't feeling very inspired about the Travel Thread today, but then I ran out to the store to pick up a few grocery items and I saw this:

FLAG.jpg

That's the view from my local grocery store's parking lot. It's kind of awesome.

Anyway, how about a thread about places we've been to, either on vacation or just in Life, where our chests swell with pride and appreciation for this great country in which we live?

We also have some great morons and moronettes who live in other countries. I would love to hear from them where, in their own home countries, they feel pride and patriotism. I know very little about that aspect of other countries. I've visited quite a few countries, but I've really never seen them through the lens of patriotism. So let's hear from you folks, too!

For me, I feel patriotic when I travel to different parts of the country and encounter the Great Spaces that our forefathers (and foremothers!) traveled through and settled. I find it particularly striking out West, perhaps because of the scale of these lands and the accessibility of the Earth's forces. How in hell did our forefathers do it? I don't know, but I'm grateful they did.

The other times I feel particularly patriotic are when I'm in airports (or on airplanes) and I see servicemen and servicewomen (in uniform) returning home from deployment. It's a special treat when I happen to be de-planing with someone in uniform... and when they are greeted by friends, family, and my fellow Americans with rounds of applause.

September 11th is this week. It's a somber day, but it is also one in which we can renew our commitment to this great country and to each other.

God bless America.

Open thread.
