AOSHQDD Primary Night: SC and VA-7 (with a Nevada bonus)
Hello and welcome again to the Decision Desk. This week, we watch South Carolina, where a divided field of conservative candidates attempt to force Lindsay Graham into a runoff. The odds don't favor them greatly: Graham is polling just around the 50% mark, and he is strongly favored to clear that. Polls close in Virginia at the same time, and all conservative eyes are on Virginia's Seventh Congressional District, where House Majority Leader Eric Cantor faces a potentially upsetting night: Vox Populi released a poll with him up a dozen points over Dave Brat. While we expect Cantor to win his primary handily (60% or better), a close result would be something: Cantor crushed his primary opponent 79% to 21% in 2012. Lastly, volunteer and frequent commentor ThePoliticalHat will be covering the Lieutenant Governor primary in Nevada, a race that, he explains, will have big implications for the upcoming 2016 Senatorial race:
The Lt. Gov. spot is open due to term limits, and Gov. Sandoval wants to make sure a Republican retains the office so that he'll be free to run against Harry Reid in 2016. Sandoval is the only GOPer who is certain to crush Reid big time.
The GOP has three candidates:
State Sen. Mark Hutchenson, who is Sandoval's personal pick.
Sue Lowden, who is making an anti-establishment coalition, and ran in the 2010 GOP Senate primary
Chris Dyer, who is a Jugaloo (seriously).
