McCain And Obama React To John Lewis' Idiocy »
October 11, 2008
Congressman John Lewis...You Know Who John McCain Kinda Reminds Me Of? George Wallace.
At one point John Lewis was an important and courageous figure in America. Now he's just a fucking hack politician who will smear someone who has the temerity to be a Republican and run against Barack Obama.
"What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history," Lewis said in a statement issued today. "Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse."
Lewis didn't accuse McCain of imitating Wallace, but suggested there were similarities.
"George Wallace never threw a bomb," Lewis noted. "He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama."
...“As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all," Lewis said today. "They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better.”
Does pointing out that Barack Obama has ties to a domestic terrorist make you racist? Apparently. Does pointing out the Barack Obama has ties to some of the most leftwing groups in America make you a racist? Apparently. Does pointing out that had we followed Barack Obama's advice we'd have handed Iraq to Islamic terrorists make you a racist? Again, apparently.
Unless Lewis and the other far left hacks can point to something McCain or Palin has specifically said that is racist or echoes Wallace and other segregationists they need to shut up. They are simply devaluing the concept of racism and exposing themselves as people who are not interested in racial equality but rather using quasi-fascist tactics to shut down any debate. That's a concept that's far more repugnant than anything McCain or Palin have ever said or done.
Oh and do enjoy this bit of tasty bipartisanship. At the Saddleback Church event, McCain listed Lewis as one of the 3 people he would seek advice from. How's that reaching across the aisle working out for you Mav?
One other thought...By your own 'logic' what kind of "conditions" are you creating Congressman Lewis when you compare McCain to Wallace? Are you suggested someone should take a shot at him like they did at Wallace? Really you son of a bitch, is that what you think should happen? Come on tell us.
Of course as Ace has pointed out many times, the left is only worried about violence when they imagine it's directed at them. Cheer leading for violence aimed at the right, it is simply another tactic.
More: Having calmed down a bit Lewis is making me almost sadder than he did mad when I first saw this. He knows what segregationist did and believed. He very nearly died standing up to them. Lewis was an American hero before I was even born and for him to throw it away and to say things he has to say in his heart are not even remotely true and will only stir up the anger and resentment he decries and fought against is an American tragedy.
I have a confession...if Obama were simply a Hillary, Kerry or Biden liberal or Chicago machine hack I'd probably vote for him simply because electing an African-American President of the United States would be worth it (we're going to have liberal Presidents, it's just the way the world works). The problem is Obama isn't a conventional liberal, he's a leftist who has hidden any trail of his prior beliefs and associations. Quite simply, McCain may not be affraid of him as President but I sure as hell am.
