First-World Problems [Joe Mannix]
The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many from which to choose...
I am now into my second year of home ownership. When I bought this house, I learned about something unexpected: batteries. Specifically, lithium batteries. So. Many. Batteries. I have lithium batteries all over my house. The remote controls for my ceiling fans take two different types of coin cells. I have a remote control for a stereo that takes a third type, also a coin cell. My doors have these stupid sensors hooked up to the security system - a security system that isn't in service but still barks at me if the sensors go offline - that use two different types of barrel cells. A smoke detector takes yet a third type of barrel cell.
Not only are so many different types involved, I have a few things where it's just one thing that uses that kind of battery. These batteries last a long time, which is good, but they also come in two-packs (or more) and that second battery is not going to last for long by the time I can use it. I now have piles of fairly expensive batteries with exactly one purpose that I can't use in other things and that will degrade before I need to put them to use. What a waste.
