Youngkin Signs Bill Making Mask Mandates Illegal By March 1st
I know March 1st sounds like a while away, but it's not -- there are only two days left in this week, four school days next week (President's Day on Monday, which I assume they'll have off), and then Monday is the last day of February, the 28th. So seven more days in toto (which is the Latin for "in the band Toto").
Also keep in mind he needed at least on Democrat Senator to pass this in the Senate (he got three -- not as many as I thought at first), and I think he had to bargain to get this to take effect immediately, so he might have had to make this small concession.
It's a win.
Here's the fruity-ass Washington Post choking down its tears to type this up:
Gov. Glenn Youngkin has signed into law a measure requiring public schools to make masks optional by March 1, taking to the grand portico of the State Capitol for a ceremony marking the first big legislative win of his administration.
The bill -- modified by the governor to go into effect immediately -- passed the Republican-controlled House Wednesday on a largely party-line vote after clearing the state Senate the night before with the support of all 19 Republicans and three Democrats.
Va. Gov. Youngkin promises quick action on bill to make masks optional in schools
Ending school mask mandates was a centerpiece of Youngkin's campaign for office and helped propel Republicans to their 52-to-48 edge in the House.
Below, the signing.
