Greetings kids. Hope your Saturday's been a restful one. Well we've got some interesting projects for you to take a look at and get some inspiration. As always, please use all tools and chemicals with caution and respect, and wear proper eye, ear and lung protection. If you're going to make a cut or perform some operation on a power tool and you feel uncomfortable, STOP. Rethink it or figure out another safer way to do it. Follow your gut, and you'll keep it intact.
Now, let's head for the basement, workshop, garage, studio or wherever it is you can make a mess and lose yourself for a few hours being creative.
George Nakashima and Sam Maloof are legendary woodworkers known for creating furniture that has an organic aesthetic. First up, Mr. Chikadee makes a Nakashima style coffee table from live edge cherry wood. Not only does he use only hand tools but I don't even think he uses sandpaper. To be that good with planes is a skill, my friends.
Compare and contrast with one of the doyens of the maker movement, Jimmy Diresta as he designs and builds a rocking chair a la Sam Maloof. He does take full advantage of an incredible vintage bandsaw as well as epoxy/sawdust for a filler, but the results are still gorgeous.
These folks are professional model makers from Germany and while I don't understand the theme of this diorama, it's a thorough how-to on all sorts of techniques.
Not only is this guy an outstanding model maker but his stop motion videography is incredibly captivating. Watch as a yellow nose P-51 Mustang kit seems to build itself.
And if you're curious as to what it takes to make a stop motion film, check this out and then think about the previous clip. Yikes!
It's the final of Landscape Artist of the Year, and up for grabs is a 10,000 Pound commission for Britain's National Trust. I've been following this season and while I like each of the finalists, I do have a favorite. I hate the subject matter but each one is an outstanding painter in her own right (just finished watching and my favorite won!).
Whether it's a hot rod or just signage, it takes skill and practice to do pinstriping. This chick is an expert and she takes you through the process step by step.
Lastly, I wish I had the space (and the skill) to try my hand at pottery. For those of you who do, here are five projects to have a go at.
