The Morning Rant: Protector Of Chinese Trade Hegemony Pretends To Be Upset About China Hosting Winter Olympics
As I documented a few months ago, National Review spent the entire Trump administration desperately trying to protect China from President Trump’s tariffs and trade policies.
Rich Lowry and the NR staff never seemed bothered by China’s slave labor camps, but when China recently “disappeared” Peng Shuai, a highly ranked tennis player, that was suddenly a bridge too far for National Review’s Editor-In-Chief. Four years of running cover for China is starting to look pretty embarrassing, it would appear.
Mr. Lowry wants to know “what the hell we were thinking” by allowing China to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Um, OK. But where was Mr. Lowry’s “what the hell were we thinking” moment when it came to tolerating China’s slave labor, or tolerating its human rights abuses, or tolerating its subjugation of Hong Kong, or the West giving China a monopoly market share of critical resources, or the outsourcing of millions of American jobs to China?
Mr. Lowry, what the hell were you and National Review doing? You were actively trying to protect China by stopping Trump.
Whether or not the Winter Olympics take place in China is of little long-term consequence – so that, of course, is where Lowry takes a symbolic stand.
You know what would have an actual impact on China? Denying it the trade that finances its regime.
But Lowry and his fellow Principled Free Traders™ don’t want any real impact. They want to engage in some indignation theater while actually doing nothing, thus allowing the Chinese tyrants to continue to prosper.
