Open Borders Fallout - Tejano South Texas Is Abandoning The Democrats

Something is happening in South Texas. Tejanos are abandoning the Democratic Party and starting to vote Republican.

Remember over the past 40 years how chamber of commerce Republicans who wanted cheap foreign labor kept defending open borders by telling us that Hispanics are cultural conservatives, and that wide open borders would get us the Hispanic vote? But Hispanics kept voting Democrat, anyway? It turns out that the way to get South Texans to finally vote Republican was to close the border. Thank you Donald Trump.

Now that Joe Biden has thrown the border open again, the contrast is clear. And it’s awful. Joe Biden has inflicted disease, misery, and squalor on South Texas, with locals having to deal with tens of thousands of desperately poor migrants who are in need of every type of emergency service.

Thanks in large part to this dystopia inflicted on South Texas, the political re-alignment is finally happening in Hispanic South Texas.

Per this poll from the far-left Dallas Morning News, only 35% of Texas Hispanics approve of Joe Biden. 54% disapprove.

It’s not just polls. It’s also happening at the ballot box.

Javier Villalobos' victory Saturday in Mexican American-majority McAllen, Texas, comes as some Latino Democrats say their party has been ignoring Mexican Americans in Texas, New Mexico and California as the Republican Party makes dents in areas once solidly blue.

And the trend extends to the presidential ballot. Even Texas Monthly (October 2021 issue) is talking frankly abut the massive re-alignment going on.

Last year, McAllen experienced the biggest shift in party vote share, toward Donald Trump, of any large city in the country save for Laredo, 150 miles to the northwest. In both border towns, Trump improved on his 2016 results by more than 23 points.

In Starr County, just upriver from McAllen, Republicans increased their turnout by almost 300 percent between 2016 and 2020. While Hillary Clinton won there by sixty points, Joe Biden barely scraped out a five-point victory. And in Zapata County, which didn’t even have a local Republican party, Trump became the first GOP presidential candidate to win since Warren G. Harding was on the ballot a century ago.

What “compassionate” Democrats don’t seem to understand is that the Tejano culture in South Texas pre-dates not only Texas and the United States, it also pre-dates Mexico. Tejano culture is not an immigrant culture. But gentry white Democrats somehow think that turning all of South Texas into one huge refugee camp for Central Americans and Haitians is popular with South Texans. It’s not. Which is making it a lot easier for culturally conservative Hispanics to finally cross over and vote Republican. Even Politico (11/17/2020) is noticing this.

In the end, Trump’s success in peeling off Latino votes in South Texas had everything to do with not talking to them as Latinos. His campaign spoke to them as Tejanos, who may be traditionally Democratic but have a set of specific concerns—among them, the oil and gas industry, gun rights and even abortion—amenable to the Republican Party’s positions, and it resonated.

So what are actual South Texas politicians saying about the crisis being imposed on South Texas?

Henry Cuellar, a Democrat Congressman from Laredo (June 10, 2021):

“Those locals, they’re frustrated because what they’re seeing … people just coming in, and in large numbers.”

“Land owners are concerned, local sheriffs are concerned, local police are concerned,” he noted. “Somebody needs to listen to our local communities.

“Bottom line is this: We believe here on the border in legal migration, we’re just against illegal migration.”

Here’s the exhausted mayor of Del Rio, Bruno Lozano, from last February, which was before the Haitian invasion of his city made things so much worse.

A Texas mayor is asking President Joe Biden to think about the reality he is creating with policies that are increasing the numbers of illegal immigrants turned loose in local communities.

“I am pleading and requesting with you to please put a halt to any measures regarding the release of immigrants awaiting court dates into the city of Del Rio and surrounding areas,” City of Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano, a Democrat, said in a video posted to YouTube.

“We do not have the resources available to house and accommodate these migrants within our community,” he said.

Tony Gonzales, the Congressman who represents Del Rio in Congress is understandably troubled by the humanitarian crisis that Biden has imposed on the border.

Tony Gonzales, a Republican who represents much of the border said: “There's no doubt there's COVID here, there's measles, tuberculosis, all kinds of diseases," he said. "You’ve got kids running around in nothing but diapers. A handful of port-a-potties — my God, the stench is terrible. This is not good for the migrants. It is not good for the residents.

Texas is not going to turn blue if Tejanos are turning red. There just aren’t enough Coexisting white leftists in Austin and Dallas to make up for the tide of Hispanics fed up with the destruction imposed on their communities by “compassionate” Democrats.
