Saturday Afternoon Chess thread 08-28-2021

IM Eva Moser AUS 01.jpg
IM Eva Moser (AUT)

We will have some sort of fishing thread later. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment

Pic Note:

Yes, I know Ms. Moser isn't smoking hot, but she had a pleasant face and nice smile, which makes for good photos. She was Austria's best woman chess master. She stopped playing tournament chess in 2015, presumably to concentrate on her ongoing battle against leukemia, to which she unfortunately succumbed in 2019 at the age of 36.

----------------

I decided to do something a bit different with today's problems. As a member of the United States Chess Federation, I get their magazine, Chess Life every month, Not only that, but members have access to the USCF online archive of back issues that stretch back many years. The USCF also puts out a magazine geared toward kids, called, appropriately enough, Chess Life For Kids and it comes out every couple of months. Which members also have access to.

So today's problems come from the latest issue of CL4K, and the descriptions/instructions, however scant they may be, are exactly are as they are presented in the magazine to the kids.

Beginner Problem - White To Play (1414)

"TACTIC #1: MATE IN ONE"

And speaking of little kids...

Chess used to be the sport of middle-aged dudes, but it's definitely a young man's game now. The level of competition is insane.

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1415)

QUIZ #4: WHITE TO PLAY

White's pawn on g7 is a powerful
force. Although the defending side
often uses it as a shield, it can also help
in a mating attack. In this quiz, a pawn
on g7 provides powerful assistance.
Some of these are hard, but I know
that You Can Do It!

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1411)

TACTIC #5: DON'T GIVE UP!

It looks pretty bad for White here,
down a bishop and two pawns. Is
there any hope of saving the game?

Problem Solutions

And the answers will be exactly how they appear in the magazine.

Beginner Problem - White To Play

1.h4, mate.

Sometimes the humblest member of the
team is the most important. Here, the h4–pawn
(supported by the b4–rook) delivers checkmate.

Solution #4: 1. g7+ Kxg7 2. Nh5+ Kh8 3.Rxh6 mate

Advanced Problem - White To Play

R7/1pk3p1/8/7p/6r1/5b1K/7P/8 w - - 0 1

39. Rc8+!!

...and the point is that the rook can never be taken
because it will be stalemate, i.e. 39. ... Kb6 40.
Rc6+! Ka5 41. Ra6+! Kb4 42. Rb6+! Kc3 43.
Rb3+! Kd4 44. Rb4+! and so forth. So long as the
rook keeps checking — and there’s no indication
that the checks ever run out — Black can never
make progress.

Hope to see you next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.
