Beginner Problem - Black To Play (1391)
Goal: Black can force mate in 2 moves
Hint: Deflect the rook on the f file and the mate will be easy

6rk/p3p2p/1p2Pp2/2p2P2/2P1nBr1/1P6/P6P/3R1R1K b - - 0 1
Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1395)
Goal: White to force mate in 5 moves
Hint: You're going to want to clear the d file so White's rook can cut off escape.

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1392)
Go for the kill. Assume Black always plays the best possible defensive move. In how many moves will you be able to force checkmate?

Problem Solutions
Beginner Problem - Black To Play

6rk/p3p2p/1p2Pp2/2p2P2/2P1nBr1/1P6/P6P/3R1R1K b - - 0 1
It's mate in 2:
1...Rg1+
2.Rxg1 Nf2#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play

r3rbk1/ppq2p1p/4pp2/1bP5/1Pp3N1/P2Q4/3N1PPP/3R1RK1 w - - 0 1
1.Nxf6+ Kg7
2.Qxh7+ Kxf6
3.Ne4+ Ke7
If 3...Ke5 then 4.f4#
4.Qh4+ f6
5.Qxf6#
Advanced Problem - White To Play

5rk1/p1p2ppp/1bQ5/3N4/2r3q1/P4R2/KPP3P1/7R w - - 0 1
Answer:
1.Qg6 Qxg6
1...fxg6 results in 2.Ne7+ Kh8 3.Rxf8#
1...hxg6 gets you an immediate 2.Ne7#
2.Ne7+ Kh8
3.Nxg6+ Kg8 ( or 3...fxg6 4.Rxf8#)
4.Ne7+ Kh8
5.Rxh7+ Kxh7
6.Rh3+ Rh4
A throwaway check only a machine would find or play.
7.Rxh4#
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
