Saturday Afternoon Chess thread 06-26-2021

samantha mendoza BOL 03.jpg
Samantha Mendoza (BOL)

Pic Note:

No, Ms. Mendoza is not titled. Her current FIDE rating is 1756 (std). Which is, eh, not spectacular. I think she gets her chess kicks mostly online.

Beginner Problem - White To Play (1377)

Goal: White to force mate in 3 moves
Hint: See how White's bishop and queen are lined up on that long diagonal?

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1364)

Show how White obtains a winning advantage.

Hint: One of the pawns will have to be sacrificed.

Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1367)

How fast can Black FINISH HIM!?

Dress Pr0n For The 'Ettes:

(I apologize for the confusion about last week's 'who dis'. A number of you guessed it was Ann Sheridan, and I said no, wrong answer. But then some morons did some sleuthing, and as it turns out, it is, indeed, Ann Sheridan. The site I downloaded it from had it mislabeled as Binnie Barnes, who I believe is a British actress. So I was wrong. I blame Trump.)

Last week's solutions:

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20210619 Problem 1.jpg
r3k2r/p1Q2pbp/bpn1p1p1/3p2N1/4n3/2P3P1/PPKB3q/R2B4 w kq - 0 1

1.Qxf7+ Kd8
2.Nxe6+ Kc8
3.Qc7#

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play

20210619 Problem 2.jpg
r6r/ppp2kp1/1b6/8/3np3/PPP2qN1/5P1P/R1NQ1RK1 b - - 0 1

1...Rxh2
2.Kxh2 Rh8+
3.Kg1 Qxg3+
4.fxg3+ Nf3+
5.Kg2 Rh2#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20210619 Problem 3.jpg
r2r2k1/1p1n2pp/p2N1p1P/3P4/1P2P3/P2q1P1B/1B5P/2b2R1K w - - 0 1

Answer:

1.Be6+! Kf8
2.hxg7+ Kxg7 (if 2...Ke7 3.Nf5+ Ke8 4.g8=Q+ Nf8 5.Qf7#)

3.Rg1+ Bg5
4.Rxg5+ Kf8 (4...Kh6 5. Nf7#)
5.Rg8+ Ke7
6. Nf5#

The other major line is if, on the first move, Black moves his king to h8 rather than f8:

1...Kh8
2.hxg7+ Kxg7
3.Rg1+ Bg5

Or 3...Kh6 4.Nf5+ Kh5 5.Bf7#

4.Rxg5+ Kf8

If 4...Kh6 then 5. Nf7#

5.Rg8+ Ke7
6. Nf5#

This week's solutions:

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20210626 Problem 1.jpg
1r1r2k1/ppn1qn1p/4bR2/1PP2p2/P2Q4/2B3P1/4PPBP/R5K1 w - - 0 1

1.Rg6+ Kf8

(1... hxg6 2. Qg7#)

2.Rg8+ Kxg8
3.Qg7#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20210626 Problem 2.jpg
8/3k4/2pP4/2P1K3/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

Answer:

1.Kf6 Kd8
2.d7 Kxd7

The key move. The fastest, and perhaps the only, way for White to make progress is to sac the advanced pawn.

3.Kf7 Kd8
4.Ke6 Kc7
5.Ke7 Kc8
6.Kd6 Kd8
7.Kxc6 wins

or White can begin by moving his king to f5, that also works:

1. Kf5 Kd8
2. d7 Kc7
3. Ke6 Kd8
4. Kf6 Kxd7
5. Kf7 Kd8
6. Ke6 Kc7
7. Ke7 Kc8
8. Kd6 Kb7
9. Kd7 Ka6
10. Kxc6 wins

Advanced Problem - White Black To Play

20210626 Problem 3.jpg
6k1/1b3pN1/6pp/1p2n3/2p4q/1BPPB1nP/1P3PP1/R3R1K1 b - - 0 1

There are a few mating lines, the longest of which is 7 moves.

1... Nf3+
2.gxf3 Qxh3 (2...Bxf3 3.Kh2 Nf1+ 4.Rxf1 Qf4+ 5.Kg1 Qg5+ 6.Kh2 Qg2#)

3.Ra8+ Bxa8
4.fxg3 Qxg3+
5.Kf1 Qxf3+
6.Bf2 (6.Kg1 Qg2#)

6...Qh3+ 7.Kg1 (7.Ke2 Qxd3#)
7...Qh1# (7...Qg2#)

Hope to see you all next week.

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.
