Intermediate Problem - White To Play

1.Re8+ Bxe8
If 1...Bg8 then 2.Ng6#
2.Qg6 Bxg6
if 2...Rxh4 then 3.Qxe8# or 2...Bd7 3.Qxh7#
3.Nxg6+ Kg8
4.Bc4+ Qd5
5.Bxd5#
Advanced Problem - White To Play

Push that pawn! Black's choices are surprising limited:
1.f6+ Kf7
He really can't take the pawn: 1...Kxf6 2.Rf8+ Ke7 3.a8=Q Rxa8 4.Rxa8 and wins
2.Rh8 Kxf6
or 2...Rxa7 3. Rh7+ Kxf6 4. Rxa7 and wins
Black's rook is pretty much stuck on the 'a' file. And if he tries to harass White's king with it, he'll soon run out of checks: 2...Ra1+ 3.Kg2 Ra2+ 4.Kf3 Ra3+ 5.Ke4 Ra4+ 6.Kd5 Ra5+ 7.Kc6 Ra6+ 8.Kb7 Rxa7+ 9.Kxa7 Kxf6 and wins.
3.a8=Q Rxa8
4.Rxa8 winning.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
