Problem Solutions
Beginner Problem - Black To Play
r4rk1/pp2ppbp/6p1/5P2/3n4/3n1PK1/PP2N1BP/R1BQ3R b - - 0 1
1...Nxf5+
2.Kg4 h5+
3.Kh3
If 3.Kg5 then Bf6#
3...Nf2#
Intermediate Problem - Black To Play
4r3/6k1/p5q1/1p2P3/1B3ppQ/P1n5/3R2PP/6K1 b - - 0 1
White is pretty much effed on the back rank and so Black pounces:
1...Qb1+!
2.Kf2 Ne4+
3.Ke2 Ng3+
4.Qxg3 Rxe5+
5.Qe3 Rxe3+
6.Kf2 Qe1#
There's no hope in taking the knight on move 4 with the h pawn:
4.hxg3 Rxe5+
5.Kf2 Qe1#
Advanced Problem - White To Play
rn1q1r2/4ppkp/b5p1/p2nP3/1p1PB3/2p2NN1/PPPQ2PP/R4RK1 w - - 0 1
Black may not look bad off, but his position is surprisingly weak.
1.Nh5+ gxh5
This capture is pretty much forced. If Black retreats, 2.Qh6 is a back breaker.
2.Qg5+ Kh8
3.Qf5
Hitting the h7 pawn with a mating threat to boot.
3...Nf6
4.exf6 Qxd4+
Black's counterattack is fruitless.
5.Nxd4 Bxf1
6.Qxh7#
Or, alternately, White can start with a knight check on f5 rather than h5:
1.Nf5+ Kg8
Or 1...gxf5 2.Qg5+ Kh8 3.Qxf5 Nf6 4.exf6 Qxd4+ 5.Nxd4 Bxf1 6.Qxh7#
2.Qh6 gxf5
3.Bxf5 Nf6
4.exf6 Qxd4+
5.Nxd4 Bxf1
6.Qxh7#
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
