Problem Solutions
Beginner Problem - White To Play
r1b1k2r/pp2bppp/8/3N2q1/2p5/8/PPP2PPP/R2QR1K1 w kq - 0 1
1.Nc7+ Kf8
2.Qd8+! Bxd8
Deflecting the bishop allows the rook to enter the fray:
3.Re8#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play
2kr3r/pppbqn2/2Pp3p/3Pp1p1/4p1n1/2P2NP1/P2Q1P2/1RB3K1 w - - 0 1
1.Rxb7 Rdg8
2.Qb2!
An important and necessary zwischenzug. Too hasty is 2.Rb8+ Kxb8 3.Qb2+ Kc8 4. Qb7+ Kd8 5.Qb8+ Bc8 and White's attack is stymied.
2...Kd8
3.Rb8+ Bc8
4.Rxc8+ Kxc8
5.Qb7+ Kd8
6.Qb8#
Advanced Problem - Black To Play
r1q2k1r/pp2pp2/2P3p1/4B1n1/P7/5BPb/2QPPP2/R2R2K1 b - - 0 1
1... Nxf3+
2. exf3 Bg2
3. Bg7+
If 3.g4 then 3...Bxf3 4.Bxh8 Qxg4+ 5.Kf1 Qg2+ 6.Ke1 Qg1#
3...Kg8
You don't want to take the bishop 3...Kxg7 because 4.g4 Bh1 5.Qb2+ f6 6.Re1 Qc7 7.Qc3 Rh3 8.Re3 bxc6 9. Rae1 Qh2+ 10.Kf1 Qf4 11.Ke2. Even with his extra bishop, it's going to take awhile for Black to dig out White's king.
4.Qf5 Qxf5
5.f4 Bf3
6.Bxh8 Qh3
7.cxb7 Qh1#
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
