BBC Head of Standards: Our Stupid, Weak-Willed Nasty Bully "Journalists" Have Become Addicted to Twitter, a "Toxic" Site Which Is Increasing Journalists' Pre-Existing Toxicity and Mental Illness
I added a little to the headline, but it's mostly as it appeared in the original and it's all true besides.
BBC journalists addicted to 'toxic' Twitter, says boss
Some BBC journalists have become addicted to Twitter, the corporation's head of standards has admitted as he warned that staff must be careful about how they use the "toxic" platform.
The broadcaster has commissioned a review of how reporters and programmes use social media amid fears that the desire to "go viral" is undermining its reputation for impartiality and accuracy.
David Jordan, the BBC's director of editorial policy and standards, disclosed that some staff had already been disciplined for "egregious" violations of social media guidelines.
Corporation journalists had been seduced by the instant gratification of social media, he said, posing risks to the BBC brand as the tone of debate on such platforms sours.
More:
Mr Jordan believes that social media websites can be 'toxic' and amid a desire to go viral which could overshadow an editorial necessity for impartiality and accuracy.
He added: 'The way social media has developed in recent times, particularly Twitter, has become adversarial, more argumentative, more combative, more polarised and sometimes toxic.
'It can suck people in, the immediacy of it can be alluring, the live dynamics of it can be seductive to some people.'
Plus, lol:
The corporation is also set to announce 100 more job losses in the news department in a bid to make savings.
Awww, sad!
