Problem Solutions
Beginner Problem - White To Play
Answer:
1.Rg8+!
There are two ways to capture the rook. But White can force mate with either one:
Capture with the rook: 1...Rxg8 2.Bf6+ Rg7 3.Rd8#
Capture with the king: 1...Kxg8 2.Rg1+ Kh8 3.Bf6#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play
2k5/2P5/8/2KN1p2/8/1r4p1/8/8 w - - 0 1
1.Kc6 Rc3+
if 1...Rb6+ 2.Nxb6# or 1...Re3 2. Nb6#
2.Nxc3 g2
3.Nd5
Another line is 3.Nb5 f4 4.Nd6#
3...g1=Q
4.Ne7#
Advanced Problem - White To Play

1.Be1!
And Black's position has a severe case of zugzwang. The bishop is protecting against mating threats by th queen at b3, c4 and e4. So:
1...Bc4 2. Qxc4#
1...Be4 2. Qxe4#
1...Bb7 2. Qc4#
1...Bb3 2. Qe4#
The king has no legal move. The leaves only the pawn. But:
1...e2
2.Rc3#
The escape square was removed by the pawn having to move.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
