The Morning Rant
( *puts on Concerny hat* )
Barring any unforeseen and unlooked for catastrophe, I think it's safe to say that Trump will win in 2020. The collection of dwarves, mental midgets, doddering old commies and clueless wonders simply can't keep up with the Orange Scalp Weasel. The Democratic candidates have been ill-served by their party, ill-served by their allies in the media, and ill-served by the own hubris. They have been duped into believing their own bullsh1t, and it will certainly cost them the presidency.
So, the question I have is, how long are Trump's coattails? Or, more precisely, how long will they be 9-10 months from now? It's fun to see the various groups such as 'Blacks For Trump', 'Women For Trump', 'Latinos for Trump' etc. making noise at Trump rallies. It's also encouraging to see Brandon Straka's "Walkaway" movement, of people who are sick to death of the craziness that their Democratic Party has been wallowing in for the past several years and are leaving.
But how big is this movement, really? And if they're walking away from the Democrats, it is not clear what they're walking to. It seems doubtful that all of the walkaways have suddenly decided to become laissez-faire conservatives. So maybe they'll become Greens or some other third party, or perhaps just sit on their hands.
I'm old enough to remember the wishful thinking in 2008 about the so-called PUMA (Party Unity, My Ass) movement in 2008, where Democrats, particularly Democratic women, got royally pissed off because Obama had succeeded in snatching the nomination away from Hillary, the heir presumptive. Then these disaffected democrats would hand the election to the GOP. Well, that didn't work out so well. Either the numbers weren't so great as we thought, or the PUMAs held their nose and voted for Obama, anyway.
So even though I am reasonably certain of Trump's re-election, I don't know if his popularity will carry over into the down-ticket races. Because I'm also old enough to remember the 1972 election where Nixon won a yuuge electoral college landslide, but the rest of the GOP benefitted hardly at all. They only won 12 seats in the House while the Democrats picked up two Senate seats, increasing their majority.
There is nothing I would like to see more than the Democrats, particularly those in the House, being forced to pay a heavy price for carrying on the shampeachment follies, say, lose 50-75 seats or more. But I don't know if this will happen. Trump has shown that he has a cross-party appeal that I think is pretty much unique. I never saw ex-Democrats jumping up and down for Marco Rubio or even Ted Cruz, who was my man in 2016 before Trump ran the table.
So this is why I am wearing my concerny hat this morning. I am afraid that Trump will win, but the Democrats will retain control of the House, and maybe even pick off a Senate seat or two. And then he investigations and impeachments will continue unabated.
