Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 12-21-2019
WGM Elena Partac (MDA)
I'm going to have to cut out early to go to a wedding, so the solutions will be posted before the usual time.
TheJamesMadison will be along later with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

1.Ne7+ Qxe7
Forced. But now the long diagonal has been cleared, which allows:
2.Bb7#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play
r2r4/5pkp/4p1p1/2p5/3nPQ2/qP4P1/P1P5/1KR4R w - - 0 1
It's mate in, at most 4 moves. If Black plays sub-optimally, he'll be mated quicker.
1.Rxh7+ Kxh7
(1...Kf8 2.Qxf7#)
2.Qxf7+ (2.Rh1+ Kg8)
2...Kh6 (2...Kh8 3.Rh1#)
3.Rh1+ Kg5
4.Qf4#
Advanced Problem - White To Play
r2r4/5pkp/4p1p1/2p5/3nPQ2/qP4P1/P1P5/1KR4R w - - 0 1
1.Na6! Bg4+
Pretty much the only way to counter the threat of Nc7#
Not 1...b6?? fails to 2.Bd5#
2.Kc7 Be2
Black is already running out of moves.
3.Bd5 Bxa6
White no longer needs the knight. He's got something else up his sleeve.
4.Bxe4
And now Black is in zugzwang. The bishop has to protect b7, so it can't move. The only move available is
4...h2
5.Bf3 h1=Q
He won't be able to use it.
6.Bxh1 Bb5
The bishop was the only black piece that could legally move.
7.Bxb7#
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
