Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 12-14-2019
IM Anna Zatonskih (USA)
MovieGique will be along later (I promise!) with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play (85)
Goal: Black can force a mate in 3
Hint: Open up the long diagonal

Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1077)
Paul Morphy is Black, playing against Louis Paulsen. He has the game won, but there's a forced mate that he missed. Can you find it?
Goal: Forced mate in 5
Hint: The solution involves a hard-to-see zwischenzug with the bishop

Solutions Update
Beginner Problem - White To Play
1rb2q1r/ppppk3/4pnQ1/4P1Bp/7P/2PB4/P4PP1/R3K3 w Q - 0 1
Pretty straightforward:
1.Bxf6+ Qxf6
2.Qxf6+ Ke8
3.Bg6#
Intermediate Problem - Black To Play
r2r2k1/5pb1/2p1P2p/2R1nBpQ/1p2N3/1P5P/PP4q1/1KR5 b - - 0 1
This one was way easier than I thought it was originally, so it's probably closer to beginner than intermediate:
1...Qxb2+
2.Kxb2 Nc4+
3.Kb1
or 3. Kc2 Na3#
3... Na3# 0-1
Advanced Problem - Black To Play
4r1k1/p1p2ppp/Qbp3r1/8/1P6/2P4b/R2P1P1P/2BR3K b - - 0 1
1...Bg2+
Bet you all aaw this one.
2.Kg1 Be4+!
This is the non-obvious move. Why move the bishop here and not, say f3? Well, because of the move that's coming next.
3.Kf1 Bf5
4.Qe2
This is the only way e1 can be made a flight square for the hing. Because there's no way to stop the check at h3. Not that this will help.
4...Bh3+
5.Ke1 Rg1#
Morphy missed this, a forced mate in 5, but won the game anyway:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bb5 Bc5 5. O-O O-O 6. Ne5 Re8 7. Nc6 dc6 8. Bc4 b5 9. Be2 Ne4 10. Ne4 Re4 11. Bf3 Re6 12. c3 Qd3 13. b4 Bb6 14. a4 ba4 15. Qa4 Bd7 16. Ra2 Rae8 17. Qa6 Qxf3 18. gxf3 Rg6+ 19. Kh1 Bh3 20. Rd1 Bg2+ 21. Kg1 Bxf3+ 22. Kf1 Bg2+ 23. Kg1 Bh3+ 24. Kh1 Bxf2 25. Qf1 Bxf1 26. Rxf1 Re2 27. Ra1 Rh6 28. d4 Be3 White resigns
There's a good discussion in this YouTube video.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
