Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 11-02-2019
IM Dinara Saduakassova (KAZ)
Pic Note
Thanks to the lurker who sent me a link to Ms. Saduakassova, who was completely unknown to me, despite all my searching for new faces. Chess hotties. There's just no end to 'em.
Moviegique will be along later with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
Beginner Problem - White To Play (1060)
Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: Box the Black king in even further
2k5/1p6/p1p1b1Q1/P1P2pP1/1Pqpp2B/4P3/1K6/8 w - - 0 1
Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1061)
Normally, K+R vs. K+B endgames are a draw, except in exceptional positiona -- like this one. Show how White can win.
Goal: White can force Black to give up his bishop
Hint: The movement of Black's bishop is severly restricted. Take advantage.
8/6R1/8/3k4/8/5b2/3K4/8 w - - 0 1
Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1056)
How does Black get a winning advantage?

Dress Pr0n For The 'Ettes:

Solutions Update
Beginner Problem - White To Play
2k5/1p6/p1p1b1Q1/P1P2pP1/1Pqpp2B/4P3/1K6/8 w - - 0 1
Black's king is really hemmed in back there:
1.Qe8+ Kc7
2.Bg3+ f4
3.Bxf4#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play
8/6R1/8/3k4/8/5b2/3K4/8 w - - 0 1
1.Ke3!
And now Black's bishop is toast. It's kind of jammed up in there because the king is blocking its path on the long diagonal.
1...Bh1
The bishop can run, but can't hide:
A:1...Bh5 2.Rg5+ Kd6 3.Rxh5
B:1...Be4 2.Rg5+ Kd6 3.Kxe4
C:1...Be2 2.Kxe2
D:1...Bg4 2.Rxg4
E:1...Bd1 2.Rd7+ Ke5 3.Rxd1
So we're left with:
2.Rg1 Be4
3.Rg5+ Kd6
4.Kxe4 and wins.
Advanced Problem - Black To Play
4r1k1/ppp2ppp/5q2/8/2P1r3/1P1QPpPb/P4P1P/R3R1KB b - - 0 1
The key move is:
1...Rxe3!
The best reply is 2.Qxe3 (If 2.Qd2 Re2 then 3.Rab1 Qb2 4.Qxe2 Rxe2 5.Bxf3 Rxe1+ 6.Rxe1 Kf8 7.Bg2 Bxg2 8.Kxg2 Qxa2 9.Re3 a5 10.h3 a4 11.bxa4 Qxa4 12.c5 Qc6+ 13.Rf3 Qxc5 and Black's queen will gobble up the pawns)
2...Rxe3
(Not 3.fxe3? f2#)
3.Rxe3 3...Qxa1+ and mate shortly.
Best moves here are 3.Rad1 or 3.Red1
3.Rad1 Rxe1+
4.Rxe1 Kf8
5.c5 Qb2
6.c6 Qc3
7.Rd1 Qxc6
8.Rd8+ Ke7
9.Rd1 Bg4
10.b4 Qc2
11.Ra1 Qc3
12.Rb1 Bf5
13.Rd1 Be6
14.a4 Bb3
15.Rb1 and Black's grip on the queenside will insure his vctory.
or
3.Red1 h5
4.a4 Re2
5.b4 h4
6.Rab1 Qf5
7.Rd8+ Kh7
8.Rdd1 Qg4
9.Rf1 Bxf1
10. Rxf1 Kg8
11.a5 Qe4
12. b5 Re1
13. Bxf3 Rxf1+
14. Kxf1 Qxf3 winning
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
