Politics Isn't Binary...Maybe Some Rational Disagreement Is A Good Thing!
As much as we decry the Left for their echo chambers, how many of us are doing the same thing? It is difficult to find rational objections to President Trump's policies and behavior...too much of it is insane NeverTrumper blather that is easy to dismiss.
But we ignore his critics and enemies at our peril. Jingoistic support of President Trump is only marginally better than jingoistic support of Presidents Obama or Clinton.
Trump Impeachment: Inevitable
I covered President Bill Clinton's House impeachment and the Senate's vote not to convict him. I thought the House was right to impeach and the Senate right not to convict. Clinton's lying under oath was serious enough to merit censure, but it was not so serious as to overturn an election.
Do I agree? Sort of.
Once again, Trump's disregard for institutional boundaries gets him into trouble. He treats world leaders as if they're campaign retainers and his private attorney, Rudy Giuliani, as if he's a top U.S. emissary.
As the most powerful man in the world, Trump really ought to have better things to do than scheme about how to embarrass a potential 2020 rival and enlist a foreign president to help him. But he can't help himself.
He doesn't seem to care that his disregard for the consequences of giving into his lesser impulses hinders his ability to get things done -- or about the stress it places on his staff and political allies.
Do I agree? No, not really, but this isn't a frothing-at-the-mouth, raving lunatic NeverTrumper who wants the Marines to storm the White House and haul President Trump off to the brig to await hanging.
And from a realpolitik perspective, knowing and appreciating the objections to our president will allow us to combat them, and instill in us the seriousness of his enemies. Merely hoping for a 45 state blowout in November of 2020 isn't going to be enough.
