Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 06-01-2019
WFM Alexandra Botez
As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
And the occasional fishing thread will be up later up this evening.
Easier Problem - White To Play (505)
Goal: White can force a mate in 4
Hint: The king can be flushed out
1Q4r1/pp2rppk/2p5/2P3p1/6P1/5N2/1q3PP1/6K1 w - - 0 1
Much to the disappointment of its investors, the 'Long Chess' variant never really caught on.
More Challenging Problem - White To Play (992)
Goal: Win the game by winning the queen
Hint: Knight forks!
4q3/5N2/B7/3k4/8/8/1K3B2/8 w - - 0 1

Easier Problem - White To Play
1Q4r1/pp2rppk/2p5/2P3p1/6P1/5N2/1q3PP1/6K1 w - - 0 1
The mate-in-4 is pretty much a straight line:
1.Qh2+ Kg6
2.Qh5+ Kf6
3.Qxg5+ Ke6
4.Qf5#
More Challenging Problem - White To Play
4q3/5N2/B7/3k4/8/8/1K3B2/8 w - - 0 1
Them knights are tricky devils. Frequently, as in this position, you can use the threat of being caught in a knight fork as a powerful weapon.
1. Bc4+! Kc6
If 1...Kxc4 or 1...Ke4 then 2.Nd6+
2. Bb5+ Kxb5
The bishop must be taken. If not,
2... Kb7 3. Nd6+
2... Kd5 3. Bxe8
2... Kc7 3. Bxe8
3.Nd6+ with the fork!
White, of course, should win the KNB vs. K endgame
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
