The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

The current college admissions scandal was tossed about in an ONT last week, and there were some interesting perspectives. Is cheating on the SAT against the law? Is bribing a soccer coach any different than bribing the president of the university with a new building or endowment? Who is injured by this corruption? Should it be in the public interest to criminalize it?

There is also an undertone of class warfare in the glee with which the media are dragging the high-profile defendants through the mud. Personally, I wasn't surprised that this was happening, got a chuckle out of the bien pensants being vilified, but ultimately? Who gives a shit? There are far worse things happening on American campuses.

The real scandals -- the hidden ones -- are the skyrocketing cost of college and the obscene machinations that universities have created to keep deserving students off their campuses, and drag unqualified but photogenic minorities of every stripe and gender and height and weight and oppressed pressure group. Well...except those pesky epicanthic-fold people, who skew the graph and must be kept out of Harvard at all costs!

And let us not forget the trivialization of the college degree. Is anyone in 2019 impressed by an undergraduate degree, especially when most of them are in crap disciplines that are watered down and infantilized to the point of absurdity? Open up any college catalog and read the descriptions of many of the classes in the liberal arts, and you will be stunned. Hell...just ask a recent college grad to write a paragraph of intelligible English, or ask xer to explain "separation of powers" or list the major members of the Axis or whether a pound of lead or a pound of feathers dropped in a vacuum will hit the ground first....

And if you really want to set fire to your locks and run screaming from the room; ask about socialism and why it will finally work in America!
