Chess Thread 03-09-2019
Kubrick on Chess:
“Among a great many other things that chess teaches you is to control the initial excitement you feel when you see something that looks good. It trains you to think before grabbing, and to think just as objectively when you’re in trouble.”
Sigh. Would that that were so. I can't remember how many games I've thrown away after getting a winning advantage and then, drunk with exhilaration, hanging a piece, or walking into a fork, etc.
Looks like that's what happened to the guy playing Black.
As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
Easier Problem - White To Play (328 )
Goal: White can win a bit of material
Hint: Use a check to force a fork
2k3r1/3p4/p3p3/5p2/8/5RPp/PnP1N2P/6K1 w - - 0 1
More Challenging Problem - White To Play (928 )
Goal: White can force a mate in 5 or 6
Hint: the f6 pawn is weak

Solutions Update
Easier Problem - White To Play
2k3r1/3p4/p3p3/5p2/8/5RPp/PnP1N2P/6K1 w - - 0 1
1. Rc3+ Kb7
Not 1...Kd8? 2.Rb3 Nc4 3.Rb8+ Kc7 4.Rxg8 which wins a rook, not just the knight.
2.Rb3+ Kc6
3.Rxb2 and White is a knight up.
More Challenging Problem - White To Play
4r3/pp1q2kp/1bpn1p2/4p2p/6P1/1BP2Q2/PP3PK1/2B1R3 w - - 0 1
1. Bh6+ Kg6
Best. Black has two other options, but they lose quickly:
#1: 1...Kxh6 2.Qxf6#
#2: 1...Kh8 2.Qxf6+ Qg7 3.Qxg7#
2.gxh5+ Kxh6
3.Qxf6+ Kxh5
4.Rh1+ Kg4
5.Rh4# 1-0
My chess app found another line that extends the game by an additional move:
4...Qh3+
5.Rxh3+ Kg4
6.Bd1#
So it's a mate in 5 or mate in 6. Call it mate in 5 because no human would play 4...Qh3+
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
