Gun Rights vs. The Rule Of Law: It Isn't So Simple
There are at least two completely unrelated issues in this article, and while both are important, to mix them up into this mishmash of platitudes and careful ignorance is a bit frustrating.
Jeff Sessions Left Behind a Record-Breaking Gun Prosecution Machine
On the evening of Nov. 30, 2015, Adarius Montrells Sims of Birmingham, Alabama, was driving his gold Grand Am home. Tired after hanging out all night, he fell asleep at the wheel. The car crashed, and medics found Sims unconscious. After the crash, a police officer peering into the wreck spotted a .40 caliber pistol on the passenger-side floorboard. Police ran Sims’s name and saw he had two prior marijuana possession convictions, a record that made that gun illegal in Alabama.
But Sims hadn’t hurt anyone and his record was nonviolent. So he was sent to a gun court rehabilitation program, paying fines, and taking classes on anger management. While taking part in the program, he met with a federal agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, who told him that he could still face federal charges despite the local gun program he was agreeing to.
I am sure Mr. Sims is a fine man, and aside from those two marijuana (the Left's sacrament) convictions he has never broken the law!
But we are a nation of Laws, and while is is certainly tempting to decry the excesses of the DOJ, the vast majority of gun owners DO obey the law, including me. I would feel a lot safer if I could carry a gun in New Jersey and New York (where I spend much of my time) but I can't because of the laws, however misguided they are, and I won't, because I respect the rule of law.
Several men with felony records in Ensley, one of the west side’s neighborhoods, told The Appeal that they understood the risks of carrying guns but choose to carry anyway because of day-to-day dangers they face.
I love this one! Anybody care to guess what the recidivism rate is among felons? Do we really want to allow felons the privilege (or right...and that's another big, and separate issue) of concealed carry after they have demonstrated their lack of respect for the rule of law?
Anyway, there are lots of interesting questions that this article brings up. Yes, it is Leftist and deluded and chaotically illogical, but still, it's a good jumping off point.
