Author Vladimir Nabokov and His Wife Véra Play Chess
Blog Note
I'm going to be away from my computer when this thread gets published and won't be in until later on. I won't be around to interact with youse guys in the comments and the problem solutions won't get published until way later.
As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
Easier Problem - White To Play (111)
Goal: White can force a mate in 4
Hint: that long, open diagonal is thrust into the heart of Black's position like a knife. Make use of it.
6k1/1p1Q1p2/2q3pp/1p4b1/r7/P1B3PK/1P5P/3R4 w - - 0 1
More Challenging Problem - White To Play (118)
Goal: White can either force a mate in 5, or win tons of material
Hint: Black's pawn on f7 is surprisingly weak

1. Rxe5!
Now, Black can either take the knight or obstruct the attack. If he takes the knight, the end comes swiftly:
1...fxe5
2.Qg6+ Kh8
3.Qxh6+ Kg8
4.f6 any
5.Qg7#
Black can try obstructing the attack with his bishop, but the end is almost as fast:
1... Bd7
2.Rxe8 Raxe8
3.Rxd7 Rc8
4.Rxf7+ Rxf7
5.Qxf7+ Kh8
6.Qxf6+ Kh7
7.Qg6+ Kh8
8.Qxh6#
Or, he can block with his Queen, after which the White queen goes on a rampage:
1...Qd7
2.Rxd7 Bxd7
3.Re7 Bxf5
4.Qxf5 Rac8
5.Qg4+ Kh7
6.Qe6 Kg6

8.Qxf7+ Kg5
9.Qg7+ Kf5
10.Qd7+ Ke4
11.Qxc8 and wins
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
