A Hopeless Case
George Kilburne
Pic Note
The guy appears to be looking at a losing position. Again. He never wins.
As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
Easier Problem - White To Play (807)
Black just moved his rook from b2 to f2. Why is this an incredibly bad move?
Goal: White can now force a mate in 3
Hint: Counterattack with king and rook

China Wins Chess Olympiad
Forgot to include this last week:
China is Olympiad champion once again. Actually, twice again.
Today in Batumi, Georgia, the open section squad won its second team gold medal in the last three Olympiads. The women's team survived a late repetition claim and successfully defended its title from 2016 in Baku. Both sections went to tiebreaks, but China emerged victorious in both after all the results came in.
It all came down to tiebreaks:
Although its players trailed the U.S. on tiebreaks going into the round (324.5-320.5), China's previous opponents outperformed the U.S's past foes, and first place switched as a result. The final calculations were China: 372.5 and U.S.: 360.5. The Americans settled for silver after being the top-ranked team going into the event, with the second-highest average rating in history.
Russia took the bronze medal with 354.5 points.
More Challenging Problem - Black To Play (808 )
Goal: Create mating threats to gain superior positional advantage
Hint: Look for how White can avoid the mating net

Solutions Update
Easier Problem - White To Play
8/5k2/2p2N2/R4K2/P3P3/1p3P2/5rr1/8 w - - 0 1
1.Ra7+ Kf8
The only move.
2.Ke6!
And now White is threatening Rf7#, about which Black can do little. The only active response would be 2...Rg7, but this is met with 3.Ra8#. On any other move, 3.Rf7#.
More Challenging Problem - Black To Play
r1b1r1k1/ppN2ppp/2p5/8/2P1n3/P3BqPP/2Q2P1K/R2R4 b - - 0 1
1...Bxh3!
Breaks up White's kingside defense.
2.Kxh3 Re5
Black should resign at this point. But he could hold out a few moves longer with:
3.Qxe4 Qxe4
4.f3 Qxe3
5.Rf1 Rd8
6.Nd5 cxd5
7.Kg2 dxc4
8.Ra2 Rh5
9.a4 Rd2+
10.Rxd2 Qxd2+ etc.
Probably the best response to Black's first move, rather than to to take the Bishop, is to defend with
2.Rg1! Qh5
3.Rh1 Nxg3
4.Nxe8 Rxe8
Do not get greedy and take the queen: 4...Bf5+ 5.Kxg3 Qg4+ 6.Kh2 Bxc2 will result in 7.Nf6+! Kf8 (7...gxf6 8.Rag1) (7...Kh8 8.Nxg4) 8.Bc5#
5.fxg3 Rxe3
6.Qd1 Qg5
7.Qe1 Bg4
8.Rf1 Bf3
9.Qxe3 Qxe3
10.Rxf3 Qxf3 and wins
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
