Slow News Day ONT

So, did anything interesting happen today? Anything at all? Seems like it was probably a quiet day, no?

Armed suspect robs convenience store, gets shot by every customer inside

From Brazil (with video). Everyone in the store was either a plainclothes or off-duty cop.

Pappy Van Winkle

If Val-U-Rite is at one end of the alcohol spectrum, than Pappy Van Winkle is at or close to the other end. Here's how to make a pretty fair substitute. Poor Man's Pappy. I have to say, I was excited when I saw the name of the website, I thought someone had archived my early weekend OpenBlogging threads.

All I'm Going To Have About Today's SCOTUS Shitshow

Why People of Good Conscience Should Make Sure the Kavanaugh Situation Never Happens Again

Y'know, I was gratified to see Republicans on the committee hitting back at the Donks, and hitting back hard. Hopefully the caucus will hold together, without anybody Flaking out, and confirm, but just how much change is upon us? A Mutiny Amid the Republican Party? Remember, while the nation has been spellbound by the waving hand that is the Kavanaugh hearings, behind their back the Republicans in Congress went and betrayed us all. Again.

Feel Good Clip of the Day

I love athletes who fight through adversity and injury to keep their eyes on the prize at the end of the rainbow.

Semper Fidelis

In what could have been a tragedy, a senior housing facility burst into flames in Washington DC this week. Fortunately it was located right by 8th and I SE. Pop quiz: What do you suppose happened next?

A: MARINES!

Video courtesy of Lyndsey Medsker (@lmedsker)

That's right. Marines came boiling out of their barracks and raced to help.

Barracks Marines immediately responded to assist local fire departments. Marines rushed into the building to rescue those who needed assistance and evacuated residents to the Marine Barracks Washington Annex where they were checked and treated for any injuries and sheltered until their loved ones arrived.

...

“But for not those really fast efforts, I’m not sure if everybody would have survived,” Councilman Charles Allen told WTOP. “We are incredibly grateful for the Marines and also for several of our neighbors who went in and started banging on doors.”

Thanks to the Marines there were no fatalities. Full story

Addendum: Tragically, they missed one man, and nobody found him for five days. Miraculously, the man was said to be in good shape and good spirits.
