A Mini Chess Thread
Good afternoon/evening to you all. I hope you haven't been steamrollered by holiday and family pressures and have had an opportunity or two to sit in a comfortable chair with a hot-buttered rum, or some equally-suitable beverage in hand, and relax for a while.
Many of you have asked about when I'm going to bring back the chess thread. I really don't know the answer, but I'm going to try an experiment here and put up a smaller version. Instead of 5 problems, there will be only two, an easy problem and one that is more challenging. And of course, a bit of dress pr0n. My goal is to gradually bring in more and more material until the old thread is back, but time will tell if I can successfully do this. I don't know how this will work out, or even if I'll be able to do it every week, but let's give it a whirl and see what happens. Thank you all for your patience.
Easy Problem - Black To Play (584)
Hint: Box White's king in even further

(h/t to the ChessZebra for this problem)
Hard Problem - White To Play (598 )
Hint: Gain time by attacking the king

And Now, A Bit of Dress Pron

Solutions Update
Easy Problem - Black To Play
r1b2r1k/pp4pp/3p4/3B4/8/1QN3Pn/PP3q1P/R3R2K b - - 0 1
A simple mate in 3:
1...Qg1+
2.Rxg1 Nf2+
3.Kg2 Bh3#
Hard Problem - White To Play
3b3k/2p5/Bp6/P7/8/n5K1/3B4/8 w - - 0 1
1.Bc3+ Kg8
Not 1...Kh7 because then 2.Bd3+ Kh6 3.a6 wins for White.
2.Bc4+ Nxc4
This is pretty much a forced capture as Black needs to reposition his knight.
3.a6 b5
Black clears off b6 for his knight, but it is all for naught.
4.Ba5! Nb6
5.Bxb6 cxb6
6.a7 Kf8
7.a8=Q and White will eventually win. For example: 7...Ke7 8.Qc6 b4 9.Qe4+ Kd7 10.Qxb4 Bc7+ 11.Kf3 Kc6
12.Qc4+ Kd7 13.Qd5+ Kc8 14.Kg4 Kb8 15.Qc6 and wins.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.
