Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread (Featuring Dress Pr0n) 10-07-2017

baby chess.jpg
"Come on, move already! I ain't got all day."

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. Also, dress pr0n. Each week, I pick out a few lovely, modest, conservative dresses for the 'ettes to admire and appraise. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a pie fight on a Saturday afternoon, unless you like old-school madness and mayhem.

Fun Fact

Prior to the 1800s, Oxford University outlawed chess, calling it "noxious, inordinate and unhonest." Its chess club was formed in 1869.

Man and Machine

Interesting piece by Garry Kasparov on losing a chess game to an AI. It's not as bad as you think:

Deep Blue was conclusive proof that machines could surpass humans in complex cognitive tasks that we had long assumed were unique to our developed brains. Using chess as a metaphor, I discuss this important distinction in my recent book Deep Thinking. Deep Blue could look at 200 million positions per second, while I was limited to two or three, and yet we competed equally. The human brain is an unmatched analogy engine, finding useful patterns to leverage our lifetime of experience to make decisions.

Garry might have lost a few games to Deep Blue, but he did a lot more with less. No matter how good the brute force engines get, there's something about human intelligence that they haven't quite captured.

Endgame of the Week (583)

It's White to play. Can he pull his fat out of the fire?

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - Black To Play

20171007 - Problem 1.jpg
2q3k1/5pp1/2n5/4p3/3P4/1Q3N2/4KP2/8 b - - 0 1

Black wins the knight simply by attacking it:

1...e4!
2.Ke3 exf3

If White tries to save the knight with, say, 2.Ng5 then Black wins with 2...Nxd4+, a forking attack on White's queen and king. Black loses either knight or queen. Either way, he loses.

Problem 2 - White To Play

20171007 - Problem 2.jpg
2r2r2/1p1b1pk1/pqn1pnpp/3pN3/8/N1P2Q1P/PP3PP1/R1B1R1K1 w - - 0 1

1. Qxf6+ Kxf6
2. Nxd7+ and wins with the forking attack.

You might have been looking at 1.Bxh6+ Kxh6 2.Qxf6, but after 2...Nxe5 3.Rxe5, Black has either 3...Qxb2, or 3...Qd8 forcing the trade of queens. In either case, material is roughly equal and White has accomplished nothing. No, 1.Qxf6+ is the move you want.

Problem 3 - White To Play

20171007 - Problem 3.jpg
r1bqrk2/pp1n1n1p/3p1p2/P1pP1P1Q/2PpP1NP/6R1/2PB4/4RBK1 w - - 0 1

Pretty straightforward:

1.Qxf7+ Kxf7
2.Nh6+ Kf8
3.Rg8+ Ke7
4.Rg7+ Kf8
5.Rf7#

Problem 4 - White To Play

20171007 - Problem 4.jpg
rn3rk1/pbppq1pp/1p2pb2/4N2Q/3PN3/3B4/PPP2PPP/R3K2R w KQ - 0 1

This is basically a king chase

1.Qxh7+ Kxh7
2.Nxf6+ Kh6

If 2...Kh8 then 3.Ng6#.

3.Neg4+ Kg5
4.h4+ Kf4
5.g3+ Kf3
6.O-O

Lasker-Thomas 1912, the game from where this problem originated, was one move longer: 6.Be2+ Kg2 7.Rh2+ Kg1 8.Kd2#

6...b5
7.Nh2#

Endgame of the Week

20171007 - Endgame.jpg
8/6P1/8/8/2p5/5K2/3p4/k7 w - - 0 1

1.Ke2

White's only move to stave off disaster.

1...c3

Forced.

2. g8=R!

The key move. And it takes a lot of foresite to see. 2.g8=Q? is the wrong approach because of 2...d1=Q+ 3.Kxd1 c2+ 4.Kc1 and stalemate.

2...d1=Q+

If 2...Kb2, then 3.Rg1 Kc2 4.Rf1 Kb3 5.Kd3 Kb4 (5...Kb2 6.Rd1 Kb3 7.Rb1+) 6.Kc2 Kb5 7.Kxc3

3.Kxd1 c2+
4.Kxc2 with mate to follow.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.
