House Will Soon Vote on National 20-Week Abortion Ban
The White House put out a strong statement in support.
“The United States is currently out of the mainstream in the family of nations,” the statement declares, “in which only 7 out of 198 nations allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.” That data comes from a 2014 study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, which studied abortion practices. We are part of a dubious club of nations that includes North Korea, China, and Vietnam, as well as the Netherlands, Singapore, and … oh, Canada. That basically puts us and Canada in league with euthanasists and forced-aborters, not exactly dignified company for Americans and Canadians.
Look, I get it that Trump is not really naturally conservative, but can we agree that he is often as conservative as one could hope for? Trump approves this; the squishes in the Senate will not.
Maybe he's just pretending to appease his base. Many GOPers beloved by the Twitter Clique will not even pretend.
I'm not sure where the power come from to make abortion a federal government concern, but the Supreme Court claimed such power existed in 1972 so whatever.
Meanwhile, keep your eye open to see if this becomes a talking point for the left:
Update: Oh sorry, I forgot the fillibuster - the Democrats have more than enough votes just to fillibuster the measure, so the #FakeNews Republicans can pretend to be in favor of this, knowing that their Democrat allies will terminate the bill for them.
Of course, should anyone suggest putting this bill into a must-pass bill like a debt ceiling hike, we'd know where those #FakeNews conservatives really stand.
