Half Of The Top "Slavery" Countries Have Something In Common...Any Guesses?
Josh Block writes a reasonable column explaining The other reason to isolate Qatar: Its appalling human-rights record. But he doesn't go far enough; he doesn't recognize that according to the definition of slavery used by The Global Slavery Index, we would have to sever ties with more than a few of our allies.
This is where being the world's moral compass (and policeman) runs squarely into realpolitik.
I have no expertise or insight into the issue of Qatar. They clearly support terrorists, so having a strategic alliance with them is problematic. But the Saudis do too (at least some of them) so what should we do with them? And India has, according to this survey, lots of slaves. Should we dump them as well?
In geopolitics, perfect is clearly the enemy of good. Should we close our bases in Qatar? How about Germany? They seem to tolerate a startlingly large amount of rape. And I am sure we have some official relationship with the Swedes, who actively hide their rape problem. How about Japan, which is notoriously xenophobic, and has laws on the books that would make our liberals' heads explode.
The list goes on and on.
