The Crossguard Joint
Everyone has seen it and written about it already, but I just wanted to add my two cents. I think JJ Abrams is being silly here. As anyone can see, the crossguard joint is impractical. Ostensibly it protects against bogarts whose fingers would burn the moment they grab for it out of turn, or if they tried to take it from your mouth. Seems like a good idea, right? But it's even more risky for the smoker. It could easily burn your fingers, lips, and nose. And, goodness sakes, keep it well away from your eyes. It's dangerous, and Abrams should be more careful about encouraging copycats out in the real world. This thing is just made to look cool for the movies.
Below, however, is a design idea that appears to fix the entire problem. It was originally created and posted by Reddit user "MoonSpider."
Note that it still guards against bogarts, but your fingers and your face are much more safe. And in a joint fight? Well, you have three hot embers to their one. Also, that fancy finger grip holder contains a diatium power cell surrounded by a power vortex ring that provides both more protection and burn time. And it's reusable. MoonSpider really hit on an idea here.
These movie makers need spend a little more time thinking about plausibility and practicality. The crossguard joint takes me right out of the movie experience. I don't want to say "that's stupid" when watching a move; I want so say "that's cool" and accept that the object in question is a real part of the movie universe.
