Dolce & Gabbana, Who Are Gay, In Fight With Elton John, Who Is Also Gay, About the Superiority of the Traditional Family Over Gay Families
Being a straight man, of course I was deeply interested in the Elton John/Dolce & Gabana tiff. Domenico Dolce had denigrated the practice of having IVF babies, and Elton John attacked him for "attacking my family" or whatever.
I didn't know this until today -- Dolce and Gabbana said a lot more than that. They actually offered -- and by the way, I have to stress that they're gay -- what would be called in America 2015 an Extreme Theocratic Rightwing Defense of the Traditional Family.
Don't believe me? Fair enough, read this then.
In the interview, translated by the Telegraph, the [gay] couple stated: "We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one.... No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed."
"You are born to a mother and a father -- or at least that's how it should be," Dolce said. "I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog."
Gabbana concurred, adding, "The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging."
In case you care, I don't agree with their very anti-IVF position -- why shouldn't a couple that's having trouble conceiving use a bit of Science to help them along?
It's not that I agree with them on their fairly hardcore traditional family defense so much that I'm surprised that anyone in the modern world has any opinions that aren't perfectly predicted by their Race/Sex/Sexual Preference identity politics profile.
Maybe this is an Italian thing, where a fair number of people still believe in God and tradition and can't be easily cudgeled into offering up the PC sop; a few years ago the owner of Barilla pasta had a boycott campaign waged against him when, in response to a question of whether he'd feature gay families in his ads, he said no, Barilla is a family-oriented product and would continue showing pictures of traditional families.
All sorts of odd things in this Telegraph article, including the revelation that Gabbana actually sought a surrogate mother for IVF fertilization. He says, though, that he'd have wanted a man (himself) and a woman to raise the child.
Now, if you're thinking, "What a great taking off point for a National Conversation on Tradition and the Family, where we can all have an honest and respectful conversation about difficult matters," you lose, because of course Elton John and Ryan Murphy are already announcing their boycotts of D&G and encouraging all of Hollywood to do likewise.
My prediction: D&G will be made to recant. Who are the selling to? Hollywood and very rich people, many of them Americans. What do those people think of Things Which Are Gay? Well, they're super-keen on Things Which Are Gay.
And what do those people think about permitting other people to have opinions that differ from their own? Well, they're not keen on that at all.
So they will do what they do, which is to use their Money and White Privilege to impose an absolute uniforming of expressed opinion.
