Mich McConnell: I Surrender On DHS Funding.
Harry Reid: Thanks But I Have A Few More Demands
Well that didn't take long. Shortly after announcing his fraudulent split bill cave, McConnell decided to go with the full cave. Alas, Harry Reid wasn't moved by Mitch's grovelling.
In an extraordinary sequence, Mitch McConnell offered Democrats Tuesday exactly what they have been asking for — “clean” full-year funding for the Department of Homeland Security. And Harry Reid said no — or at least, not yet.
Majority Leader McConnell’s offer of passing a clean full-year Homeland Security bill through the Senate shorn of immigration provisions — which he said could happen very quickly with Democratic cooperation — was put on hold by Minority Leader Reid, who told reporters he was waiting to hear Speaker John A. Boehner agree to pass it through the House first.
“We have to make sure that we get a bill to the president,” Reid said. “Unless Boehner’s in on the deal, it won’t happen.”
It wasn't so long ago that nothing Republicans liked could pass Congress because they *only* controlled the House and could mount Senate filibusters. One election, an expanded House majority and new Senate majority later and...Harry Reid is running the entire Congress of the United States with a minority that was thrown out of power (allegedly) less than 2 months ago.
With his cave McConnell has tossed a live grenade back to the House. I'm sure they are thrilled. Well, as long as "they" are Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats.
Rank-and-file House Republicans on Wednesday bashed the Senate GOP’s plan to vote on a “clean” Homeland Security funding bill, arguing they wanted to stand firm in attacking President Obama’s immigration actions.
While a few House Republicans said they were prepared to vote for a bill without the immigration measures, many more loudly criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) approach as they left a closed-door conference meeting.
...
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told his conference he hadn't spoken to McConnell in two weeks, but plans to do so Wednesday, multiple Republicans leaving the meeting said.
At his press conference after the meeting, Boehner appeared to want to talk about anything expect the funding fight dominating Washington and repeatedly refused to take a position on McConnell's new plan.
Boehner said he wants the Senate to vote on a plan before he'll detail the House's next move.
If Reid sticks to his guns, and he'd be a fool not to, DHS will shutdown and the story will be about how the fractured GOP can't do anytyhing and are putting the country at risk in the process. One thing no one will be talking about...Democrats are putting the welfare of illegal aliens ahead of national security.
Well done Senator McConnell! You are real man of genius.
If he had any brains or balls (which he doesn't), he'd walk back his clean offer and stand shoulder to shoulder with the House. The reason is simple, if they let Reid run the entire Congress on this bill, he will run it for the next two years. Reid is taking the Congress hostage and threatening to shoot them. You don't negotiate with terrorists. You beat them.
What? It's no longer ok to call politicians "hostage takers"?
The GOP brought this on themselves. They announced that there would be no shutdowns and that their highest priority was showing they could be reasonable adults who could govern. There's nothing wrong with that in theory. In practice the problem is "reasonable" is always defined as "what the Democrats want". Once you announce the two things you are most afraid of you've handed the enemy a map of how to destroy you. McConnell seems surprised that Reid is acting on this knowledge. That's because he's an ass.
BREAKING! Must Credit AoSHQ:
Harry Reid has issued additional demands before accepting the GOP's complete surrender on DHS funding--
1. John Boehner has to take to the floor of the House and bark like a dog for 30 seconds.
2. Mitch McConnell must show up to the Senate wearing a t-shirt saying, "I'm Mitch and I'm Harry's Bitch".
We'll keep you update on when Boehner and McConnell agree to these new terms.
