Mitch McConnell's Exciting New Plan To Deal With Executive Amnesty/DHS Funding Impasse: Give The Democrats Everything They Want.
This is not the hill you're looking for. Powder must be kept dry. Shut up and vote GOP (which a lot of people did based on the GOP's promises on this very issue. Suckers).
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took steps Monday to prevent a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security by splitting off legislation attacking President Obama’s immigration actions from the funding fight.
The Kentucky Republican is seeking to fast-track legislation to eliminate two new immigration programs launched by Obama late last year, while allowing a 2012 initiative targeting younger immigrants to continue as designed.
McConnell’s move sets the stage for separate votes on a measure to fund the Homeland Security Department (DHS) past Friday and to dismantle Obama’s unilateral efforts to shield millions of illegal immigrants from deportation.
McConnell's plan is to pass his "anti-amnesty" bill the would undo the second round of executive amnesty while leaving the first round covering the so-called "dreamers" in place. When that bill passes, fails or doesn't even reach the floor because the Democrats will just filibuster that one too, he will introduce the "clean" DHS funding bill Obama and congressional Democrats want. He'll then call it a day and stick the House will all the pressure.
The only question that remains is, will Boehner find enough liberal Republicans in the House to pass this article of surrender or will he need Pelosi to deliver up some Democrats?
In other words...complete surrender to the Democrats. Obama will sign the "clean" DHS funding bill and then veto the stand alone repeal bill should it somehow even get to him.
Oh and before the Team GOP apologists show up and say, "what would you do Mr. Tough Talk"...here's my plan. Spoiler: It involves tying Democrats to the idea that they are more interested in protecting illegal aliens than the country. But let's be honest, the GOP doesn't do that sort of messaging, except against conservatives in primaries.
This is being billed as McConnell setting "a trap" for red state Democrats but really it's a lifeline for them and Republicans who want to fool idiot conservatives. They will be able to say they voted to keep DHS open AND defund the amnesty. In fact, they know the reason for putting the anti-amnesty language in the DHS bill was to give them leverage over Obama. Of course they pissed that away before they even took office by saying "no "shutdowns.""
It's funny how when the GOP was in the minority they had to cave when these deadlines and cliffs showed up and now that they are in the majority...they still have to cave. Well, they don't "have to", they just want to.
Congratulations to Majority Leader Harry Reid. You win again.
