Travel Thread: Staycations [Y-not]
As much as I hate the term "staycation" -- primarily because it's meant as a chirpy spin on the fact that the Democrats have screwed the pooch so badly few of us can afford a real vacation -- there's something to be said for learning how to treat your home town like a vacation spot. One of my favorite things to do is to lure Mr Y-not into playing hooky from work, even if it's just for an afternoon, and going to a new part of town for a weekday lunch and stroll.
Wallethub has ranked American cities based on their attractiveness as "staycation" destinations based on twenty factors including recreational activities, weather, dining, and relaxation opportunities. Here's a quick summary in a graphic display:
I confess, I find the lack of explanation of their "map" confusing. The top ranked city -- Buffalo, New York! -- is represented by a small green disk. So small disks seem to be better than big ones and green seems to be better than red. Rounding out the top five staycation cities are Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Portland (Oregon). Interestingly, four of the five worst cities are in California.
I'm kind of laughing my head off that Boise, Idaho made their ranking and the did not even bother to consider Salt Lake City, Utah. I've been to Boise. It's really not that great.
What do you think of their rankings?
What do you look for in a good "staycation" city?
