Cool Song

Is this something? I think it's something. It was released in 2007 but it sounds like it could have been released on the Weird Science soundtrack album. There's a little Thomas Dolby in here, a little Revenge of the Nerds talent show, and I think a little bassline from Howard Faltermeyer's "The Theme From Fletch."

I couldn't figure out what it was about -- death of a child, maybe? Good Lord, I don't want to hear a song about that! -- so I looked it up. It's just about a break-up, but with a slightly more interesting twist than the usual break-up song. This song is written from the perspective of, say, 4 to 6 or 8 years after the break-up, so the guy isn't in his waah-waah emoting mode. The idea is that he's moved on, and is in fact married now (hence the line "My wife imagined you were smaller/surprised you were human"), but is still thinking about the break-up one day, as people sometimes do. So it's a melancholy reminiscence, with distance provided by actual distance of numerous years, and musing about final resolution ("I wish that we could talk about it/but then, that's the problem").
