Reflecting on the Airport Security That Might Have Been
It strikes me that it's not really fair to criticize the TSA without giving them guidance as to our thinking on airport security needs. So here, in the spirit of outreach to those who molestprotect us, is a short list of things we wanted to see, compared to what the TSA gave us:
What We Wanted
What TSA Gave Us
Let us leave our shoes on!
Take shoes off! And belts! And anything metallic! And baggy clothing!!
Accelerate the screening process!
Add 10 second delay for full body scan!!
No more pat downs!
More invasive pat downs!!
Let us take liquids on!
Hahahahaha!!!
So the changes implemented by the TSA went in exactly the wrong direction: we wanted fewer hassles and delays, and the TSA increased hassles and delays. We wanted our rights as passengers restored, and the TSA decided that we don't have any.
Imagine a screening process where you don't have to take your laptops & liquids out, where you don't take your shoes off, and where your friends and family can accompany you to the gate. Air travel would be fast, convenient, and fun. Improved detection technology is supposed to make that happen, not make our trips even more painful.
But we, unfortunately, live in a Napolitano world.
