Well Megan McArdle makes a pretty good argument that that's the case. If there really is a defect in the car's system, why does it disproportionately affect drivers over 70 years old? And why mostly when the car is going from a stopped position?
It's starting to look a lot like the Audi acceleration scare back during the 80's which was ultimately found to be caused by 'driver pedal misapplication'. And it took 13 years for Audi's sales to recover which explains why Toyota is worried about a 'lost decade'.
