The state of ClimateGate today, Dec 9 2009. [krakatoa]
(A series of daily-ish roundups of the day's Climate news and commentary.)
This is by no means a comprehensive recap. The stories come from a variety of sources, and I highly recommend exploring the linked sites for more breaking news.
(after the break...)
Scientists get vocal against the Copenhagen Climate Summit. In an open letter to U.N. SecGen Moon signed by 140 or so PhDs, Scientists object to policy actions based on AGW theories, and challenge AGW proponents demonstrate real-world observational data to prove a list of 10 of the AGW alarmist's claims.
I don't think the IPCC sciencytists are terribly fond of real-world observed data though.
Two sets of results from investigations into CO2 levels as far back as 33 million year don't support the AGW Evangelists. Sure you say, but is the research peer reviewed?
Why yes, yes it is. And, I might add, kinda-pretty relevant to the central thesis upon which AGW depends.
These are of significance because whereas the climate models used by the IPCC rely on software to represent a large number of highly complex Earth processes, these results are equivalent to experimental observations on the Earth itself.
Prompting multi-trillionaire Tim Flannery, chairman of the Copenhagen Climate Council to say:
"We can't pretend we have perfect knowledge: we don't."
The research has yet to be challenged, as AGW groups apparently have better things to do than actually defend their theories against skeptical research and results. I'm sure they are working diligently to ensure the offending editors find work more suited to them.
You really need to read the whole article, but it ends with a cutting quote by noted lunatic flat-Earther Richard Feynmann:
"It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong."
Let's all hold our breath on that one, yes? For the polar bears.
IPCC chair and Cricket enthusiast Rajendra Pachauri spins mightily, relying on the tried and true strategy that if you repeat a lie often and boldly, it will take seed.
He claims the CRUtape letters (I forget who coined that) are nothing but a little playground rough-housing...
This was purely private communications between friends, between, colleagues, they were letting off steam. I think we should see it as nothing more than that."
...and reassures us that the Science is settled on his sciencytist's data:
"There are so many checks and balances in the processes and procedures that we follow at the IPCC, there is not one iota of possibility that [something like unreliable climate data could have made its way into the IPCC report.]"
Via WUWT, a follow up on yesterday's deconstruction of Darwin Airport data. Today's episode features a lovely lighthouse with modernized vehicular access.
Q: How damaging to your argument was the disclosure of e-mails from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University?
A: To paraphrase Shakespeare, it’s sound and fury signifying nothing. I haven’t read all the e-mails, but the most recent one is more than 10 years old. These private exchanges between these scientists do not in any way cause any question about the scientific consensus. But the noise machine built by the climate deniers often seizes on what they can blow out of proportion, so they’ve thought this is a bigger deal than it is.
I forgot to mention he invented the internets, and apparently has determined that that email headers were post-dated by as much as 9 years and 11 months. Probably by Dick Cheney.
Watts also brings to our attention the exciting new game show for AGW sciency-ologists struggling to explain away the Urban Heat Island affect on their data:
Are you smarter than a 6th grader?
Finally, Watts suggests you all bundle up. Solar geomagnetic activity is at an all time low.
