Jack Lucas, USMC, RIP
The youngest man ever to receive the Medal of Honor since the American Civil War.
Mr. Lucas passed away this morning at age 80. This Marine lied his way into the service at age 14. At 17 (six days into that age), on Iwo Jima he shielded three fellow Marines from two grenades, one of which exploded and pushed 250 pieces of metal into his body.
I hollered to my pals to get out and did a Superman dive at the grenades. I wasn't a Superman after I got hit. I let out one helluva scream when that thing went off."
The Marines figured out his age before he deployed. They threatened to send him home. He said if they did, he'd just join the Army.
In this photo he is attending a Hillary rally, saluting, and God bless him.
He sacrificed his body, to save his brothers. He lived a long life, we were fortunate to have him around. So many men who fought in this war are leaving us now. We're poorer for losing them, but there is a whole new generation of Marines who are with us now, who will be here long after we are gone, who carry on the finest traditions of the Marine Corps.
And has been said before, there is no greater love.
Rest Marine.
