The Battle of Okinawa, April 1 1945.
Called the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War, over 12,000 Americans killed and 38,000 wounded. Significant in that it caused us to rethink our battle strategy as we tightened the noose around Japan.
Thanks for the tip from commenter Thomas, who also notes that New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has a grandfather who served with the 1st Marine Division, and went ashore this day, 63 years ago.
