AQ In Iraq Head Dead, Killed By Red on Red? »
May 01, 2007
Abu Ayyub al-Masri
Rumor is that the current leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq has been recently demoted.
The Interior Ministry spokesman, Brig. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, told state television that authorities did not have absolute confirmation that al-Masri was dead but that reports indicated he was killed by fellow al-Qaida members in an ambush at the Safi bridge north of Baghdad.
"Sources of the Interior Ministry witnessed the killing of this criminal," Khalaf said.
Most other reports indicate that it was actually Sunnis who assassinated al Masri.
From Reuters, a glittering comedic jewel:
If true, the death of Abu Ayyub al-Masri would signal a deepening split at a time when the Shi'ite-led government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is trying to woo some insurgent groups into the political process.
The way they...surround a story.
