Der Spiegel Suggests Giving The Israelis/Jews The German State of Schleswig-Holstein
Lost In Translation Sarcasm Update: A reader, Andy, who seems to sprechen de German, says this article is sarcastic, the writer is actually pro-Israel and writes often about German anti-semitism, so he's making a Swiftian sort of Modest Proposal. Obviously, this, ahem, changes my opinion about this piece.
I don't know why I'm acting this way. I don't read German for a living.
Article follows past the jump. I'm keeping my error up, the way I'm told I'm supposed to, but past the jump, because if this is sarcastic, the article itself doesn't seem very newsworthy. Except perhaps to show that Germans, contrary to rumor, can exhibit a sense of humor from time to time.
Strange on so many levels. How should a Jew take this?
One one hand, it's nice to see Germans (largely anti-Israel) concede that the entire Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and hence most ME conflict, is the result of their own genocidal actions.
On the other hand, for some bizarre reason, Der Spiegel is actually supporting Iran's crazy idea of relocating the people now residing in Israel.
And, of course, I can't imagine many Jews would be thrilled at the idea of living, essentially, in a German colony. Germany of all places. Germany, which 1) still hates Jews and 2) periodically gets very militant about taking back historic German lands.
Bizarre.
Wasn't there a 40 year period when Germans had common sense to avoid alk-tay about the ew-Jays? Maybe we should go back to that.
