Soxblog Punditry: William Weld Will Be The Next Governor of New York
And he says that as an outspoken non-fan of Weld.
For all the criticisms of RINO's, let's face it, in some states only a RINO has any sort of shot of being elected to any statewide office. You can have your principles or you can have your victories, and in cases where both are possible (like, say, with Pat Toomey's bid to knock off Alren Specter last cycle), you should take your shot at both. (Which Bush and the Republican Establishment did not.)
But in liberal New York -- represented in the Senate by popular Senators Hillary! Rodham and Chuck Schumer -- an anti-tax social liberal is as close as you're likely to come to a genuine conservative. At least as far as actually winning a high office.

PS: They'll never outlaw abortion in New York, even if Roe v. Wade is overturned and that policy-decision devolves to the state where it belongs, so supporting a pro-choice Republican is a zero-cost move. It costs you nothing. If 47 states outlawed or severely restricted abortion, you could still get third-trimester abortions in New York, always and forever.
