Lyric Fragment Quiz Answers

Here are the answers to the lyric fragment quiz:

1. "monkey can't stand"

Sophie B. Hawkins, Damn! I Wish I Was Your Lover. The lyric is actually "This monkey can't stand to see you black and blue."

2. "don't keep it in ya"

INXS, New Sensation. I think it goes, "You're only human/what can you do?/Don't keep it in ya/Well there's a reason why I'm here" and then the chorus.

3. "western shore"

Led Zeppelin, Immigrant Song -- "Our only goal will be the western shore-- aaaaa-aaaahh-AAAHHHH"

4. "stay alive"

Big Country, In a Big Country. "Stay alive" is how the chorus concludes.

5. "such a dirty mind"

The Knack, My Sharona. Total gimme. "Never gonna stop/get it up/such a dirty mind."

I put that in so that people who aren't good at this could at least get one.

Can't believe everyone didn't get it. You guys must be really young, because there was a summer when you couldn't avoid hearing that song. Not that I tried to avoid it.

6. "du liebst mir nicht"

Trio, "Da Da Da." The English lyric -- "I don't love you/You don't love me, a-hah" -- I thought would be too easy.

7. "and she wouldn't give it to me"

Suicidal Tendencies, Institutionalized. "And all I wanted was a Pepsi/and she wouldn't give it to me/just a pepsi/and she wouldn't give it to me."

Basically, I threw this in here because so many of the other songs were girly or top-forty pop and I wanted to pretend that I was a punk when I was younger.

Yeah, I was punk all right. A punk with every album Hall & Oates ever recorded.

You didn't want to fuck with me, man. I'd go One on One all over you, man. Your face would be saying, I Can't Go For That (No Can Do), but I just wouldn't stop pounding your teeth into powder.

8. "fight you to the end"

Jane Child, Don't Want to Fall in Love. "Don't want to fall in love/love cuts just like a knife/you make the knife feel good/I'll fight you till the end."

9. "the thing just isn't movin' "

I didn't want to do this one, but I figured I had to. Robbie Neville, Ce La Vie. Something in the second verse about your nice new car breaking down, "the thing just isn't movin'."

10. "I'd like to... watch"

Prince, Alphabet Street. Something like "See, I'm tired, so if you don't mind, I'd like to... watch."

11. "cool on craze"

Wang Chung, Dance Hall Days. "We were so in love/in our Dance Hall Days/We were cool on craze/but when I, you, and everyone we knew..."

12. "invitation to the world"

Erasure, Chains of Love. Hey, I still like this song. Yes, I'm aware it's a gay anthem. What of it?

13. "food of love"

Maybe this wasn't as big a hit as I thought, but damnit, I'm sure it was some sort of hit. It's off INXS second (big) album, the one after Shaboo Shabah, The Swing. It's Love Is (What I Say):

This is
Food of love
They said
They got it wrong
Smiling
You and I
Thinking
Never say die

etc.

14. "hurt you too"

Stone Temple Pilots, Sex Type Thing. "I am, I am, I am I said I wanna get next to you, don't wanna have to hurt you too, hurt you too" or something like that.

15. "nest of salt"

Nirvana, All Apologies. "Find my nest of salt/everything's my fault."

16. "sex is overrated too"

Ugly Kid Joe, (And I Hate) Everything About You.

17. "freezing their eyes"

Blue Oyster Cult, Burnin' For You. The Reaper would have been too easy, I thought. Trouble is, this might be a botch.

One site reported the lyrics as:

Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I'm not the one to tell you what's wrong or what's right
I've seen signs of what (freezing their eyes) went through

I should have realized that read a little sketchy.

Another site says the lyrics are:

Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I’m not the one to tell you what’s wrong and what’s right
I’ve seen suns that were freezing and lives that were through

Which makes a LOT more sense.

Sorry. I think I fucked that one up, big-time.

18. "noises above"

James, Laid. The bed is afire/with passionate love/the neighbors complain/about the noises above." Not sure if it's on fire or afire, or even alive, and it's too late to check.

19. "feelin' lonely people"

This was a really tough one. It's from Urge Overkill's Positive Bleeding. This lyric was too tough to put on the quiz; it's not prominent or memorable. I just really wanted to have a lyric from Positive Bleeding in the quiz, and the rest were too easy ("You can bleed if you want to bleed" seems rather obvious).

20. "tellin' you a secret"

Dinosaur Junior, Start Choppin', the song where the guy sings like Elmer Fudd. "I ain't tellin' you a secret/I ain't tellin you good-bye-eye-eye."

21. "shook and lurched"

Crash Test Dummies, Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm. "They shook and lurched all over the church floor."

22. "But you've gone out to town"

Tough one. Another song I wanted on this list but couldn't find a lyric that was both prominent but non-obvious. It's from The Kinks' Catch Me Now I'm Fallin' (Captain America Callin'). The lyric goes "But when I call your on the telephone/you're secretary says she's sorry but you've gone out to town."

23. "Disney abbatoir"

An obscurity. Tokyo Storm Warning by Elvis Costello. "Well the sky fell over cheap Korean monster-movie scenery/and spilled into the mezzanine of the crushed-capsule hotel/between the Disney abbatoir and the chemical refinery...."

24. "stole the Renoir"

Duran Duran, The Reflex. "I stole the Renoir and the tv set/don't wanna be around when this gets out" or something like that. Actually: Shit, I think he says he "SOLD" the Renoir and the tv set.

Sorry.

25. "there, where?"

This is in Joe Jackson's Is She Really Goin' Out With Him?: "Look over there (where?) there goes Janey with her new boyfriend" or something like that.

But that wasn't the one I was thinking of. I was actually thinking, for some reason, of Joan Jett's Do You Wanna Touch (Me There), which just has a chorus of "Do you wanna touch, do you wanna touch, do you wanna touch me there, where?"

26. "blow it all away"

Howard Jones, people! Things Can Only Get Better: "And do you feel scared (I do, but I won't stop and falter)/and if we blow it all away/things can only get better."

27. "dream for insomniacs"

Soul Asylum, Someone to Shove. "It's a dream for insomniacs/prize in the cracker jacks/all the difference in the world/is just a call away..."

28. "sticky everywhere"

Sexiest. Summer Song. Ever. The Breeders, Saints. "I like all the different people/I like sticky everywhere/Look around, you bet I'll be there!/Hot metal in the sun/Pony in the air/Sooey and saints at the fair." Summer is ready when you are.

29. "I got a notion"

Had to throw in Billy Squier. My Kind of Lover. "You got the motions baby/I got a notion maybe I'll stick around/And oh...
I can never doubt you for too long... I can't see no reason
You're my kinda lover..." Etc.

30. "kinda sad and uninspired"

Thompson Twins, Lay Your Hands On Me. "This old life seemed much too long/With little point in going on/I couldn't think of what to say/
Words just vanished in the haze/I was feeling cold and tired
Yeah kinda sad and uninspired/But when it almost seemed too much/
I see your face/And sense the grace/And feel the magic in your touch" and then the chorus.
