Atlanta Dream's State Farm Arena allegedly put fan in pro-transgender shirt on Jumbotron before security told mother and daughter they'd be removed if they didn't cover XX-XY shirts, a brand Sophie Cunningham had posed with.

By the way, can I mention a pet peeve? A long, long time ago it was unusual to see a sports team with a singular nickname. Like, "the Avalanche." Rather than a plural, like "the Jets."

You Old-Heads might, like me, remember the old "NASL" soccer league. That league featured a lot of teams with a singular nickname.

But this stopped being a novelty many, many years ago, as more and more teams adopted singular nicknames. In fact, it's now a cliche.

So of course the WNBA has to be the most cliched franchise on earth and feature mostly singular nicknames. Atlanta Dream. Connecticut Sun. Chicago Sky. Indiana Fever. New York Liberty. Phoenix Mercury. Portland Fire. Seattle Storm.

I had to look these up, you know. I can't name them off the top of my head like some commenters I could name but won't. (Garrett.)

The "singular team name" thing is only attention grabbing when there's one singular team name among many plural names.

Fights over silent protests against males in women's sports have jumped from the high school soccer field to the professional basketball arena, as the WNBA wrings its hands over the meaning of "women" with just six weeks until the playoffs and eight months before a draft that could include NBA veterans who claim eligibility under league rules.

Fans of gender-critical Indiana Fever sharpshooter Sophie Cunningham allege that security ordered them to cover up their XX-XY Athletics shirts, which promote female-only sports, at Sunday's Atlanta Dream home game against the visiting Fever at State Farm Arena, where Cunningham celebrated her 30th birthday with an overtime win.

This was despite the fact that Cunningham appeared with XX-XY founder Jennifer Sey, the 1986 U.S. Women's All-Around National Champion gymnast, and Riley Gaines, the former collegiate swimmer, at a Minnesota Lynx game soon after Cunningham endorsed female-only sports in an ESPN profile.

Minnesota Lynx, another one. But maybe "lynx" is also a plural. But if so, it's plural selected to sound singular.

Both the WNBA and Dream confirmed the incident late Monday, saying fans were wrongly asked by league security -- not the team's personnel -- to cover their shirts, but did not mention the content of the clothing.

"This should not have happened," a league spokesperson told Front Office Sports.

"The Atlanta Dream believes in creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Unfortunately, at last night's game, WNBA security took actions that fell short of that standard," the team said.

It represents an escalation in response since Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton allegedly cursed out teenage Cunningham fans in XX-XY Athletics gear, also holding signs thanking her for "speaking up for girls," when the Fever visited the Storm last month. Cunningham shamed Keaton on social media.

Seattle journalist Brandi Kruse, who helped organize a pro-Cunningham rally outside the game, reported the girls weren't told to cover the shirts or hide the signs. She said Climate Pledge Arena security refused to remove Keaton for harassing fans, though the WNBA suspended her for five home games for unspecified behavior.

"They gave us t-shirts during overtime and told us we had to leave or cover our [XX-XY] shirts up," an unidentified woman who attended Sunday's Fever-Dream game with her teenage daughter told conservative activist Adam Francisco after the game.

The daughter said they paid $1,000 each for their seats on floor 3, row C, three rows from the court, to support Cunningham and girls' sports.

"We did nothing. We were just sitting there," the mother said, adding that she had wanted to make signs supporting Cunningham but refrained so as not to ruffle feathers at the game. Their shirts have variations of the XX-XY logo on the front, and on the daughter's Riley Gaines collaboration shirt, "for the girls" on the back.

Bonus: The WNBA subreddit has banned any mentions of the WNBA's second-most popular player. Leftwing women have a stroooooong inclination towards fascism.

And now, in perhaps the most ridiculous and explanatory example of the league's fandom, has seen her name banned from the WNBA subreddit. Seriously.

One Reddit user tried to post about Sophie Cunningham in the r/WNBA subreddit, only to find that they weren't able to use her name or several other abbreviations. They then messaged the moderators, who then confirmed that this was a purposeful decision and that any further questioning would lean to being banned.

"Why do you ban people from posting about Sophie Cunningham, who's a WNBA player?," the user asked. "We filter content based on Sophi [sic] because it tends to bring out trolls and people who aren't fans of the W," the mod answered.

"But she's a WNBA player that does have actual fans," the user responded. "If you can't post about a player you're a fan of, that seems ridiculous."

"We have chosen to filter content. If you want to post freely about Sophie you can go to a different sub," the mod said. Unsurprisingly, the user pointed out that it's absurd to block posts about a WNBA player in the r/WNBA subreddit, asking how that made sense.

"You aren't even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this you will be banned," the moderator answered.

If women controlled the world there would be no petty squabbling.
