Wednesday Night ONT - August 5, 2026 [TRex]

08052026-20260530-IMG_20260530_123431511.jpg

Good evening Horde! The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. The bar is open and (mostly) re-stocked. We're overstocked on RC Cola at the moment though so don't be shy about asking for refills. Only the best for the Horde...

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. If you're a troll, go away.

This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

Dog brought to emergency clinic after eating 2.4 pounds of gummy worms

A dog was rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic in Australia after eating 2.4 pounds of gummy worms.

Animal Emergency Service Jindalee said 3-year-old beagle Scooter was brought in by her panicked owners after consuming an entire bag of gummy worms - known in Australia as "jelly snakes."

Veterinary nurse manager Kate Wesche said the candies luckily did not contain xylitol, a chemical that can be toxic to dogs, but veterinarians made the decision to induce vomiting anyway due to concerns about the high sugar content.

Scooter ended up regurgitating 2.4 pounds of gummy worms.

Wesche told 1News Scooter had "clearly no regrets in her decision."

Please secure your gummy worms. There is a photo at the link if you're really, really curious to see the dog...and the aftermath.

Old story, but... Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds

For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.

His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most - not the nutritional value of the food.

The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.

For a class project, Haub limited himself to less than 1,800 calories a day. A man of Haub's pre-dieting size usually consumes about 2,600 calories daily. So he followed a basic principle of weight loss: He consumed significantly fewer calories than he burned.

But you might expect other indicators of health would have suffered. Not so.

Haub's "bad" cholesterol, or LDL, dropped 20 percent and his "good" cholesterol, or HDL, increased by 20 percent. He reduced the level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, by 39 percent.

Science!

German Priorities

Germans: These steep hills along the Rhine and Mosel Rivers are great places to grow Riesling but they are extremely steep and difficult to manage. The Riesling is delicious so we must impose our will on the landscape to grow grapes.

Also Germans: As long as we have these ridiculous hillside vineyards, we might as well race cars through them.

If you're wondering where the Rallye Mittelrhein is run, look for Piesport and Trittenheim on your map.

And yes, the local Riesling is wonderful. They keep the good (dry) stuff and export the sweet stuff.

I will admit that I initially clicked on this video with low expectations. Expectations exceeded.

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Jeffery the Librarian. As you might guess, the channel is operated by a guy named Jeffery who is a professional librarian and historian. Jeffery primarily devotes his channel to telling stories of history with maps.

Always been interested in battles of the civil war, but just couldn't wrap your mind around who was where doing what, when and why? I have a much easier time reading about history when I have a map nearby. But static maps are a snapshot in time. They are not dynamic. Jeffery builds dynamic maps and drills down to specific historical events to tell the story.

For example, you may generally know about the Battle of Gettysburg, but have you ever seen a detailed illustration of each unit's positioning and involvement on Day One? Jeffery has a dozen or so videos that get into the detail. He shows topography to explain the presence and importance of high ground. He shows modern day maps and streets along with a sense of what the landscape looked like in period. If you have an ancestor that fought in any of the battles he covers, the videos will give you a sense of what they experienced.

No background music. No clickbait. Just simple and clear scripts delivered with simple and clear maps and labels. Just under 100k subscribers and videos with several hundred thousand views. Recommended.

Here's a great example of background, context, positioning and focus on Day One at the Battle of Gettysburg:
